On a hot summer afternoon, during our holiday back home, in my nona's garden, which could be described as a typical and quintessential Mediterranean garden, filled with different types of trees from fig, lemon, olive, clementine, to cherry, and a variety of fresh herbs like basil, origano, rosemary and capers, my son, who was standing on an old stone table, under the pergola, reaching for some juicy grapes, asked me what we would be having for dinner.

I paused for a very brief moment, enjoying the summer cicada sound, and then simply replied, “beans and sardines.” “Oh, yummy,” he said with a smile. “Beans and sardines”, he repeated, “it sounds lovely mummy and it even rhymes.” It all started here…
